Sentinel Earth signs MoU with FAEPA and SENAR-PA to convert degraded pasture to cocoa and açaí agroforestry in Pará
One of the first agroforestry insetting projects worldwide designed from inception to the GHG Protocol Land Sector and Removals Standard v1.0
Cham, Switzerland · 10 August 2026
Sentinel Earth has signed an MoU with FAEPA and SENAR-PA, the official representation and training institutions of Pará's rural sector, to develop cocoa and açaí agroforestry on degraded pasture in the Transamazônica corridor of Pará, Brazil's largest cocoa-producing state. The corridor alone accounts for a third of national output.
The project is designed from inception to report under the GHG Protocol Land Sector and Removals Standard v1.0, effective January 2027. Removals sit inside offtake counterparties' value chains rather than being issued as offsets, with Verra VM0047 optionality retained.
Key facts
- Full-chain traceability by design: every plot georeferenced from establishment, giving buyers EUDR-ready origin data and removals traceable to the land management unit level under the GHG Protocol LSR Standard, structured to count against corporate SBTi FLAG targets
- A trajectory waiting on finance: cocoa agroforestry in the Transamazônica corridor expanded 2.2× between 2010 and 2024, over 61,000 hectares added (IBGE-PAM), one of the few Amazonian land-use trends bending from clearance toward tree cover. That pace, roughly 4,400 hectares a year against 2 million eligible, is the case for structured finance: adoption is proven; capital and capacity are the constraints.
- Scaling envelope: pilot phase in Southeastern Pará, with a pathway across the state's eligible degraded pasture base, mapped via MapBiomas
- Producer aggregation at institutional scale: cooperation with FAEPA/SENAR-PA anchors the programme in Pará's rural producer institutions, with the reach and training infrastructure to scale across the state rather than contracting farm by farm
