Azure Road is a verified Scope 3 logistics insetting project using battery-swapping electric trucks across China, with reductions issued through the 123Carbon registry.

The project

Decarbonising heavy-duty freight with battery-swapping e-trucks

Azure Road replaces diesel haulage with battery-electric heavy-duty trucks across four Chinese provinces. The operating fleet of 287 Class 8 electric trucks uses fast battery swapping to keep vehicles moving on demanding freight routes while avoiding the long downtime associated with conventional charging.

In 2025, the fleet moved more than 289 million tonne-kilometres of freight and delivered a 44.2% greenhouse gas reduction against the diesel baseline. A dedicated 4.5 MWp off-grid solar station is designed to supply the battery-swapping network, increasing emissions reductions as renewable power reaches full operating capacity.

Azure Road is an insetting programme. The reductions occur within freight activity and can be assigned to corporate Scope 3 inventories through a controlled book-and-claim chain of custody. Environmental Attribute Certificates are serialised and retired through the 123Carbon registry following independent verification by Normec Verifavia under recognised assurance standards.

Project outcomes

What changes on the ground.

01

Verified freight reductions

Primary operational data links electricity use, route activity and tonne-kilometres to the calculated reduction.

02

Scope 3 relevance

Certificates are designed for companies addressing upstream and downstream freight emissions in Categories 4 and 9.

03

Cleaner logistics

Electric trucks reduce direct diesel combustion and local air pollution along the routes they operate.

04

Renewable infrastructure

Dedicated solar generation supports the battery-swapping network and increases emissions reductions as renewable power comes online.

05

Unique retirement

Every certificate is serialised and retired to one buyer, protecting against double claiming.

Buyer fit

Companies seeking auditable Scope 3 freight reductions linked to real electric trucking activity in China.

Availability

Issued certificates are available through the 123Carbon registry, subject to inventory and contracting.
