The project
Föhn establishes an integrated recovery-to-destruction system for high-global-warming-potential refrigerants contained in end-of-life cooling equipment across Morocco. The programme is developed with the Moroccan Ministry of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development and financed through the KliK Foundation under the Article 6.2 cooperation framework between Morocco and Switzerland.
The Kigali Amendment reduces future production and consumption of high-GWP refrigerants, but it does not eliminate the gases already installed in air conditioners, refrigerators, chillers and industrial systems. When end-of-life equipment is dismantled without proper recovery, those gases can be released directly into the atmosphere.
Föhn creates a national collection, recovery and destruction chain. Refrigerants are extracted by trained technicians, transported under controlled conditions and permanently destroyed using approved technology designed to achieve 99.99% destruction efficiency. A digital MRV system tracks each quantity from collection to final destruction, supporting the issuance and transfer of Internationally Transferred Mitigation Outcomes between Morocco and Switzerland.
